From 7 century B.C. on the territory of Kerch there was an ancient city Pantikapey, which was one of the first cities, founded by greeks in North Prichernomorye. It is supposed that the name Pantikapey in scythian language had the meaning 'The Fish way': panta is 'way', kapa is 'fish'. There is a legend that Pantikapey was founded by the descendants of argonauts, the son of Aet and brother of Medea. The territory for building of the city the scythian tsar Agaet passed to the greeks.
