    Introduction

The Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra is another of the numerous motherboards based on the Intel 845PE chipset.

Like many of its competitors, the Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra comes with an integrated RAID 0+1 ATA133 controller, a 10/100Base-T Ethernet controller, and a six-channel, 5.1 sound-card, as well as the DualBIOS BIOS-protection system.

The GA-8PE667 Ultra also includes the Easytune 4 Overclocking system, and AGP Antiburn technology, and support for 533MHz FSB Pentium 4's and DDR333 memory.

In short, the GA-8PE667 Ultra is well-equipped, and ready to go, so let's say we put it through the motions, shall we?

    Characteristics of the GA-8PE667 Ultra

    Audio chipset
    Realtek ALC650E

    Audio

The Gigabyte GA-PE667 Ultra's audio circuitry is based around a Realtek ALC650E sound-chip. The ALC650E supports AC3, and 5.1 Surround Sound, and allows users to hook-in up to six audio channels, including a center base channel.

From a fidelity standpoint, the Realtek AL650E is quite good at what it does, and should satisfy most users.

    Configuration

The Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra's design includes only a few jumpers, none of which relate to the CPU. Thus, once you have the board installed, configuration is a simple matter of dropping into the BIOS.

The "Frequency/Voltage Control" menu, for instance, allows users to manually adjust the FSB frequency to a setting ranging from 100MHz to 355MHz in 1MHz increments, or to let the system to determine a proper frequency automatically.

The BIOS also allows the memory bus ratio to be set to 2 or 2.5.

The Vcore, DDR, and AGP voltages can also be adjusted, though the selection of voltages in rather limited.

Contrary to other 845PE motherboards, to adjust memory timing settings, the users need to press "CTRL+ F1" key otherwise this menu will not be accessible.

In fact, the Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra is a little uncooperative with Overclockers and tweakers in general and this hidden menu seems to be designed in order to prevent end users to fool around with settings that might cause instabilities.

In our opinion, the GA-8PE667 Ultra seems to be "Ultra" in name only. While it does have some of the features that are in high demand from power users, in other areas, it is clearly lacking. Among those features most missed are Firewire ports, Serial ATA connectors, and Gigabit Ethernet.
